ESI's Gerald Knaus came to Thessaloniki for the 3rd Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs ("The World in 2015 an Beyond") at the invitation of the Navarino network, a local civic organisation which has worked for a long time to open Thessaloniki to the world. In his presentation he spoke about the state of the Balkans in 2014, about false confidence and complacency. Participants included Elmar Brok, Member of the European Parliament, Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs, Laza Kekic, Regional Director, Central & Eastern Europe, Economist Intelligence Unit, Michael Massourakis, Chief economist, Alpha Bank, and others.

Gerald also met with Thessaloniki's mayor, Yannis Boutaris, for an interview which he describes in detail in his blog: Cosmopolitan visionary – Boutaris and Thessaloniki
